Andosols in drained wetland in South Iceland. The soils have formed in eolian, tephra and organic deposits. The lighter colored top represents eolian materials deposited over the last 1100 years after Iceland was settled (increased erosion and deposition). The darker colored materials are richer in peat, and contain two layers of birch woodland remnants. The bottom is about 10 000 years old glacio-fluvial surface.
